vegansofig:

I’ve had this questions a lot, so I wanted to address it in a post.
I am against the use of any animal product. Period. I will not wear second hand leather, vintage fur, or an old wool sweater. I do not support taxidermy. I do not believe “it’s a waste” to not eat the eggs of my adopted hens. Bees are not a vegetable, neither are fish. I’m not cool with carmine or beeswax in my mascara. If it comes an animal, it’s not vegan.
The definition of veganism states: “Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose. By definition, veganism is not defined as a diet, but a way of living. While vegans follow an animal-free diet, they also do not wear animals or use them for entertainment or any other purpose.”
I understand that with new vegans transitioning to veganism can take some time, but as a ten year veteran, I have no excuse. I will not look down on a newbie for “not being vegan enough.” I encourage them to keep moving forward. I make mistakes, but I will not justify them, I learn from them. As a vegan, you are a walking advertisement for veganism. One has to understand that ANY animal product you use is promoting the idea that animals are a subspecies and it is acceptable for us to use them.
To say it is a waste not to use animal flesh or their byproducts contributes to the objectification of animals, and perpetuates the myth that’s it’s somehow okay to use them for ourselves. They are not here for us, they exist for their own reasons.
While I will agree there are some synthetic materials that are not as environmentally friendly as others, to me that does not make it acceptable to buy and wear second hand dead animals. May I remind you what leather is, dead skin.
I show you this image because this is where your animal products came from and you have the choice whether or not to continue their exploitation. Whether or not they’re new or second hand, an animal still had to DIE, and I’m not cool with that. #vegansofig
